The Russian Social Democratic Labor Party[a] (RSDLP) was a socialist political party operating in the Russian Empire. It was founded in 1898 as a merger of multiple left-wing groupings.
For much of the party's history, it was dominated by internal struggle between the rightists represented by the Mensheviks and leftists represented by the Bolsheviks. After the Bolsheviks seized power in the Great October Socialist Revolution in 1917, the RSDLP was effectively dissolved. In 1918, the Bolshevik party formally renamed itself the Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks).
