Salvador Guillermo Allende Gossens (26 June 1908 – 11 September 1973) was a Chilean doctor and socialist politician who has been described as the first "Marxist" president to be elected in a liberal democracy in Latin America.

Allende sought to nationalize and socialize the Chilean economy. He attempted to create an computer automated-economy in a project called Project Cybersyn. He formed a coalition known as the Popular Unity Coalition, which included communists, social democrats, and radical christian democrats.

He re-established relations with Cuba, alongside Mexico and Canada, and the People's Republic of China.

On September 11, 1973, a CIA-aided military coup led by Augusto Pinochet overthrew Allende, whom remained defiant till the very end, even as bombs fell onto the Modeda, the presidential palace. Once Pinochet's soldiers managed to surround and enter the palace, Allende committed suicide with an AK rifle gifted to him by Fidel Castro (allegedly).[1]
