The Hungarian People's Republic[a] was a socialist people's democracy in Eastern Europe which existed from 1949 until its dissolution in 1989. During its socialist period under Mátyás Rákosi, the country was able to achieve massive improvements in the areas of economics, social relations, and political development towards a proletarian state.[1]
