South America[a] is a continent largely situated in the Southern Hemisphere. To its north is North America and the Caribbean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean to its east, the Southern Ocean to its south, and the Pacific Ocean to its West. Since the 16th century, the continent has been subjected to a genocide of its indigenous population. In the modern era, the countries of South America have been the targets of United States imperialism.[1]
