Stefan Engel (born 1954) is a German Marxist-Leninist politician and theorist. He was the longtime chairman of the Marxist-Leninist Party of Germany from its foundation in 1982 until 2017, after which he continued as the head of its theoretical organ. Engel is considered one of the most prominent contemporary representatives of anti-revisionist Marxism-Leninism in Germany.

Biography

Stefan Engel was born in 1954 in Germany and grew up in a working-class family. In the early 1970s, he became active in the revolutionary workers’ movement and joined Marxist-Leninist circles that opposed the policies of both the SPD and the revisionist German Communist Party.

Engel played a central role in the founding of the Marxist-Leninist Party of Germany in 1982. As chairman, he emphasized the application of Marxism-Leninism to modern industrial society, revolutionary strategy in an imperialist stage, and the need for proletarian leadership in the ecological struggle. Under his leadership, the MLPD developed into a significant force within Germany’s far-left political spectrum.

In 2017, Engel stepped down as party chairman but continued as leader of the theoretical organ of the party, contributing to ideological work and strategic debates.

Theoretical Work

Engel is known for his writings on modern capitalism, revolutionary strategy, and the critique of opportunism and revisionism. His works often analyze contemporary developments such as globalization, environmental destruction, and the transition to what he terms the “imperialist world system.”

Stefan Engel has authored several books and theoretical documents, among them:

  • The Crisis of the Bourgeois Ideology and the Doctrine of the Mode of Thinking (2003)
  • Dawn of the International Socialist Revolution (2011)
  • The Crisis of the Imperialist World System and the Socialist Revolution (2017)
  • Catastrophe Alert! What is to be done against the Willful Destruction of the Unity of Humanity and Nature? (2014)
  • On the Emergance of New-Imperialist Countries (2017)
