English is an Indo-European language of the West Germanic branch which is commonly spoken as a native language in the United Kingdom, United States, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Due to centuries of United States and British colonialism and imperialism, English has reached the status of a global lingua franca.
