The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)[a] is an imperialist military alliance consisting of 32 member states in North America and Europe. It was created and has been largely dominated by the United States and, more presently, the countries of European Union. It was originally created for the primary purpose of opposing and threatening the Soviet Union and other socialist states. Since the fall of the USSR in 1991, the alliance has existed for more general imperialist hegemonic purposes.[1]
