The Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic (RSFSR),[a] known as the Russian Soviet Republic or simply Soviet Russia, was an independent socialist state formed during the Great October Socialist Revolution in 1917. It was headed by the Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks) who united the proletariat into one of the first dictatorships of the proletariat in history. The RSFSR would be reconstituted as a constituency of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics with its formation in 1922.
