The Communist Party of Germany (KPD),[a] was a communist party in Germany. After the Second World War, the eastern branch of the KPD was merged with the Social Democratic Party to form the Socialist Unity Party (SED), which would become the ruling party of the East Germany. After the death of Joseph Stalin, the SED, as well as many other parties around the globe, took an opportunist turn.
