The Socialist Unity Party of Germany (German: Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands, SED) was the ruling party of the German Democratic Republic. It was formed as a merger between the Eastern branches of the Communist Party of Germany and Social Democratic Party of Germany. Initially a communist party, the SED would turn to revisionism by the 1950s. The party was disbanded in 1989.
