The AK Rifle (Avtomat Kalashnikova[a]) refers to a pattern of assault rifles designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov. The first production models of the rifles are colloquially known as the "AK-47". The AK was adopted in 1949, replacing the SKS the AK would become the standard issue rifle of many socialist states and other countries supported by them.
