The AK Rifle (Avtomat Kalashnikova[a]) refers to a pattern of assault rifles designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov. The first production models of the rifles are colloquially known as the "AK-47". The AK was adopted in 1949, replacing the SKS as standard issue rifle of the Soviet Union. The AK would become the standard issue rifle of many socialist states and other countries supported by them. The AK has become a symbol of revolution and socialism.
