The burghers were a class which mainly existed under feudalism that later developed into the bourgeoisie. The burghers mainly were similar to the petty bourgeoisie today, in that their capital mostly depended on the labor of the proprietor.

However, with the development of industry, the industrial big bourgeoisie arose and later, through bourgeois revolution, gained power of the state and created its own bourgeois superstructure.
