The dictatorship of the bourgeoisie is the state under capitalism. It emerges as a necessity for the bourgeoisie to maintain private property and repress the proletariat following the emergence of capitalism after bourgeois revolutions through use of forceful institutions such as police, military, and legal systems. Although the function of the bourgeois state is always the same, its particular manifestation differs based on its circumstances; one of its most common forms being bourgeois democracy while another being fascism in times of crisis.
