Leon Trotsky[a] (1879–1940) was an opportunist figure who vacillated between Mensheviks and Bolsheviks while seeking to promote his own tendency. He is the main proponent of Trotskyism.[1]

Stalin wrote that Trotskyism evolved to take two primary forms, before and after the 1917 Bolshevik revolution respectively. "New Trotskyism", faced with the reality of the efficacy of Bolshevism, began moving away from overt forms of criticism towards Lenin and the Bolsheviks, as had been done before. Instaed, subversive activities such as the promotion of ultra-democracy were promoted by him in order to undermine the Bolshevik party apparatus.

The legacy of this can be seen today, with many Trotskyists often self-identifying as Leninists.
