Juche is a revisionist ideology and the official state ideology of North Korea. Although Juche was initially described by Kim Il-sung as a development of Marxism–Leninism applied to Korea's conditions,[1] his son Kim Jong-il later admitted it was an entirely new philosophy.[1] In 1992, the North Korean constitution began eliminating all traces to Marxism–Leninism.[1] Kim Jong-il described Marxism–Leninism as "outdated" and said that it had "historical limitations".[2]

Juche sees the "popular masses" as the "subjects of history". This is revisionist because it denies the role material conditions play in shaping societal development, as well as denying the role that the working class plays in this. Juche claims to be scientific[3] but in practice, its core tenets run counter to scientific socialism.
