"American Progress", by John Gast, 1872. Manifest Destiny was an example of settler-colonialism in which European settlers displaced and murdered indigenous populations in the United States.

Settler-colonialism is a form of colonial rule by which the indigenous population of an area is either exterminated or forcefully relocated (ethnic cleansing) to a designated territory and, in their place, new settler populations from overseas are introduced on the conquered land. The non-indigenous population of the settler-colony is rendered servile to the settler bourgeoisie with bribery in the form of stolen native lands being given out with little-to-no cost. Examples of modern settler-colonies include Israel, the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.[a]

Settler-colonialism is often accompanied by fierce racism and xenophobia on the part of the settler populations. Ideologies such as fascism have sought to introduce settler-colonialism and enslave or genocide native populations in the conquered land of their enemies.

Notes

  1. Besides Israel, these countries do not function as historical settler-colonial projects insofar as the large-scale use of stolen land as a form of social bribery no longer takes place. However, many aspects of settler-colonial relations such as the usage of reservations still exists.
