Erich Honecker (25 August 1912 – 29 May 1994) was a German revisionist politician who served as General Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) from 1971 to 1989 and as Chairman of the State Council of the German Democratic Republic from 1976 to 1989. Honecker is remembered as a Khrushchevite, opportunist, and betrayer of revolutionary principles, responsible for steering the GDR into stagnation and bureaucratic degeneration.
