The Kingdom of Sweden,[a] often known simply as Sweden, is an imperialist state in Northern Europe. It borders Norway to the west and north, and Finland to the east. It is a member of the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
History
Sweden gained inpendence on June 6, 1523 after an independence war against Denmark (then called the Kalmar Union). Sweden went on to become a great power in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries which is commonly called "Stormaktstiden" (English: Great Power era) in Sweden, the Great Power era started with the reign of Gustavus Adolphus in 1611 and ended with Sweden's defeat in the Great Northern War in 1721.
Politics
The Kingdom of Sweden is governed as a constitutional monarchy under a social democratic state. However, the government has increasingly adopted neoliberalism in recent years.
The Prime Minister as of January 2026 is Ulf Kristersson and the Monarch is Carl XVI Gustaf
