Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías (28 July 1954 – 5 March 2013) was a bourgeois politician. He was president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela from 1999 until his death in 2013. Although western media claimed he was a socialist, he promoted parliamentary reform and eschewed violent revolution. Chávez himself referred to himself as a social-democrat.[1] His style of social-democracy was titled "Chavismo". Chávez and his successor Nicolas Maduro persecuted communists during their respective reigns.[2]
