The Italian Republic, commonly known as Italy,[a] is an imperialist state located in Southern and Western Europe. It shares borders with France to the west, Switzerland and Austria to the north, and Slovenia to the east. The two microstates of Vatican City and San Marino are enclaved in it.

The modern Italian Republic emerged following the fall of the fascist regime and an institutional referendum that abolished the monarchy. The nascent republic would be characterised by collaboration between revisionists and other bourgeois forces. Communist groups would be suppressed by the US and NATO-led Operation Gladio.

Italy is part of the EU, NATO, the G7, and the G20. It is often labeled as the "least of the great powers".[2]
