The red and black flag, commonly used by libertarian socialists.

Libertarian socialism is a term which refers to various nominally socialist tendencies which seek to build socialism without the dictatorship of the proletariat or a vanguard party to wage class struggle. The most prominent libertarian socialist tendency is anarchism, which rejects the state in all its forms. Certain revisionist Marxist tendencies also align with libertarian socialism, such as many forms of "left" communism.

Libertarian socialism largely rejects any form of materialist analysis and upholds idealism and individualism. Libertarian socialist praxis is ultimately rendered ineffective due to their rejection of the need for a working class state to defend socialist construction, reliance on spontaneity, and their seeking to introduce stateless communism without changing the materialism conditions which gave rise to the state and classes.
