The People's Republic of Peru,[a] also known as the People's Republic of New Democracy or New Democratic Republic,[b] was an embryonic socialist state intended to replace the bourgeois Republic of Peru. It was led by the Communist Party of Peru and controlled up to 60% of the country at its apex. The nascent state fell in the 1990s following the capture of the Communist Party's leadership.
