Todor Zhivkov was the General Secretary of the Bulgarian Communist Party from 4 March 1954 to 10 November 1989. He gained power through the forced resignation of Valko Chervenkov in Khrushchev's imposed De-Stalinization process. Zhivkov led capitalist restoration in Bulgaria. He was also responsible for the "De-Turkification" policy which involved intense national oppression of minority Turkish populations. In 1965 there was a coup attempt against him lead by Ivan Todorov-Gorunya and other anti-revisionists, sadly this failed and the persons involved were punished and removed from the party.[1][2][3]
