The French Republic,[a] commonly known as France, is an imperialist state primarily located in Western Europe. It maintains colonial outposts in the form of French Guiana in South America along with various island holdings in North America, Oceania, and the Indian Ocean. Its continental land borders Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy to the west and Spain, Andorra, and Monaco to the south.
In a process spanning many centuries, France emerged as one of the main imperialist-colonialist great powers in the world, maintaining vast colonies in Africa and Asia. In the present day, French imperialist continues through neo-colonial military interference and exploitation in its former Africa colonies along with its leading role in the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.[1]
