The National Liberation Army was founded on a Marxist-Leninist Cuban oriented ideology by Fabio Vásquez Castaño on July 4, 1964. The inherence of the group's primary leadership role to Camilo Torres Restrepo in 1965 shifted their focus to Liberation Theology and Anti-Revisionism. Following his death in 1966, and the subsequent inheritance of the organization to Manuel Pérez , the group's official position was designated as Camilism. After the unsuccessful People's War directed by Pérez in the 1980s, their established Marxist-Leninist-Maoist character deteriorated back into Foco while still upholding Camilism. Today they are still engaging in the Colombian Conflict, seeking to establish a Socialist state.
Ideology
Whilst the group's primary Marxist influence shifted from Focoism to Marxism-Leninism-Maoism and subsequently back into Focoism, it has always upheld Liberation Theology and Camilism.
