Front cover of a French edition of The State and Revolution.

The State and Revolution[a] is a 1917 theoretical work by Vladimir Lenin. It describes the nature of the state as an instrument of class struggle and rule which historically emerged due to the irreconcilability of class contradictions. It further elaborates upon the vainness of reformism, the nature of bourgeois democracy, and the need for a revolutionary dictatorship of the proletariat under socialism.
